SECTION VI FORMATION AND TRANSPORT OF ACID MINE DRAINAGE Chemical Aspects of Acid Formation

چکیده
The sulfur-bearing minerals which predominate in coal seams are the iron sulfide ores pyrite, marcasite, amorphous 'sulfur-balls', and less commonly the monosulfide pyrrhotite. Excluding pyrrhotite, all have the same ratio of sulfur to iron but have different crystalline properties. The amorphous structure is reported to be the most reactive due to its large surface area, followed by pyrrhotite, marcasite, and pyrite. These crystalline structures are shown in Figure 6-1. The term FeS2 is used here to represent the crystalline pyritic agglomerates associated with coal strata, excluding the monosulfide (pyrrhotite (FeS)).

Jarosite versus Soluble Iron-Sulfate Formation and Their Role in Acid Mine Drainage Formation at the Pan de Azúcar Mine Tailings (Zn-Pb-Ag), NW Argentina
Secondary jarosite and water-soluble iron-sulfate minerals control the composition of acid mine waters formed by the oxidation of sulfide in tailings impoundments at the (Zn-Pb-Ag) Pan de Azúcar mine located in the Pozuelos Lagoon Basin (semi-arid climate) in Northwest (NW) Argentina. In the primary zone of the tailings (9.5 wt % pyrite-marcasite) precipitation of anglesite (PbSO4), wupatkite (...
متن کاملMitochondrial reduction of the carcinogen chromate: formation of chromium(V).
Incubation of chromate with isolated rat liver mitochondria in vitro resulted in the uptake and reduction of chromium(VI), as well as the formation of chromium(V) species. Chromate was rapidly taken up and reduced by intact mitochondria. The rate of reduction of chromate by intact mitochondria was increased upon addition of succinate or malate plus glutamate, substrates for the electron-transpo...
متن کاملIncorporation of Aqueous and Sorption Kinetics and Biodegradation into Toughreact
The needs for considering aqueous and sorption kinetics and microbiological processes arises in many subsurface problems, such as environmental and acid mine remediation. A general rate expression has been implemented into TOUGHREACT, which considers multiple mechanisms (pathways) and includes multiple product, Monod, and inhibition terms. In this paper, the formulation for incorporating kineti...
متن کاملFormation of nitrate and sulfate in the plume of Berlin.
BACKGROUND, AIMS AND SCOPE Secondary inorganic aerosol (SIA), i.e. particulate sulphate (S(VI)), ammonium and nitrate (N(V)), is formed from gaseous precursors, i.e. sulfur dioxide (S(IV)), ammonia and nitrogen oxides, in polluted air on the time-scale of hours to days. Besides particulate ammonium and nitrate, the respective gaseous species ammonia and nitric acid can be formed as well. SIA co...
متن کاملDevelopment of Hydrate Formation Phase Envelope: An Experimental Approach in One of the Iranian Gas Reservoirs
Iran's proved natural gas reserves are the world's second largest reserves. Mainly, because of different climate changes and different reservoirs characterizations, studying the behavior of producing outcome fluids and their transportation, is of major interest. One of the main problems occur in the gas reservoirs is related to the hydrate formation while producing from a well, either in produc...
